Malta

• Indian ordinary passport holders require a Schengen visa to travel to Malta for tourism.

• Malta should be the applicant's correct main Schengen destination.

Apply through Malta when:

Malta is the only Schengen destination

OR

Malta is the main destination based on the longest stay or principal purpose of travel.

If the applicant will spend an equal number of days in several Schengen countries, competence can depend on the first country of entry.

• Applications are submitted personally through VFS Global.

• The High Commission may request additional documentation or a personal interview.

• Applications should normally be submitted at least 15 days before travel.

Passport Requirements

• Original Indian passport

• Passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years

• Passport must remain valid for at least 3 months after the intended stay

• Passport must contain at least 3 blank pages according to Malta's current 2026 India Tourist Visa checklist

• Copy of current passport bio-data page

• Copy of last page of Indian passport

• Copies of previous Schengen entry/exit stamps where available.

Important: 

The general VFS page mentions two blank pages, but Malta's newer 2026 Tourism Checklist specifically asks for at least 3 blank pages. Tripex should therefore use 3 blank pages as the safer requirement.

Photograph

One recent colour photograph.

Size: 

35 × 45 mm

Requirements:

• White background 

• Recent photograph 

• Do not staple the photograph to the application form.

The applicant's photograph is also captured at VFS as part of the biometric process.

Cover Letter

Mandatory.

The applicant's cover letter should mention:

• Purpose of travel 

• Duration of stay 

• Names of accompanying persons 

• Transportation arrangements 

• Accommodation details.

Flight Reservation

Mandatory.

Provide:

• Return / round-trip flight reservation

If travelling to several Schengen countries:

• Internal flight reservation 

• Train itinerary 

• Car rental or other relevant transport evidence.

Travel Itinerary

Required.

Provide:

• Travel-agency confirmation for an organised tour

OR

• Another appropriate document clearly showing the planned tourism itinerary.

Accommodation

Mandatory.

For normal hotel-based tourism:

• Confirmed hotel booking.

If staying privately in Malta:

A completed Declaration of Proof can be required together with:

• Host's Malta ID/passport 

• Proof of host's residence 

• Property title/rental agreement/utility evidence 

• Host's income evidence 

• Other applicable supporting documents.

The Declaration of Proof must follow Malta's formal witnessing/notarial requirements.

If visiting multiple Schengen countries, accommodation should cover each destination.

Travel Medical Insurance

Mandatory.

Minimum Coverage: 

EUR 30,000

Insurance must:

• Be valid throughout the Schengen Area 

• Cover the full journey including arrival and departure dates 

• Cover emergency medical expenses and applicable repatriation requirements.

Important 2026 India Rule: 

From 1 January 2026, Malta accepts travel medical insurance for India applications only when issued by an insurer included on the approved Schengen insurance-company list for India.

Financial Requirements

Malta's current official Schengen border reference amount is:

EUR 48 per person per day.

Examples:

5-day trip:

10-day trip:

15-day trip:

EUR 720

This is an immigration reference amount and does not mean that showing exactly this balance guarantees visa approval.

Bank Statement

Mandatory for the applicable applicant categories.

Malta's 2026 India Tourism Checklist requires:

Original personal bank statement showing movements for the last 3 months

The statement must be:

• Stamped by the bank 

• Signed by the bank.

For Employed Applicants

Provide:

• Original bank statements for the last 3 months 

• Last 3 months payslips 

• Employment contract 

• Employer's approved holiday / leave statement 

• Indian Income Tax Return acknowledgement for the last 2 assessment years.

For Self-Employed / Company Owners

Provide:

• Original personal bank statements for the last 3 months

• Company registration certificate

• GST registration number for companies based in India

• Indian Income Tax Return acknowledgement for the last 2 assessment years

• Business bank-account statement.

For Sponsored Applicants

Provide:

• Original applicant bank statement for the last 3 months

• Proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation using the applicable national form where required

• Applicant's Indian Income Tax Return acknowledgement for the last 2 assessment years.

Additional sponsor financial documents may be requested depending on the circumstances.

For Retired Applicants

Provide:

• Pension statements for the last 3 months

AND/OR

• Proof of regular income generated through property or business.

For Students

The current 2026 Malta Tourism Checklist does not create a separate mandatory student-document category.

Tripex Recommendation:

Where applicable, collect:

• School / College / University enrolment evidence 

• Student ID 

• Sponsor financial documents 

• Proof of relationship with sponsor.

These can help demonstrate the applicant's circumstances and ties to India.

For Unemployed Applicants

The current checklist does not provide a standalone unemployed-applicant category.

Where another person funds the trip, the application should clearly demonstrate sponsorship and sufficient financial resources.

Tripex should collect appropriate sponsor and relationship evidence according to the individual case.

Aadhaar Card

Mandatory.

Malta's current 2026 India Tourist Visa checklist specifically requires:

Aadhaar Card along with a photocopy.

PAN Card

Not listed as a mandatory Malta Tourist Visa document.

Income Tax Returns

For employed and self-employed applicants:

Last 2 assessment years

Malta's 2026 checklist specifically requires Indian ITR acknowledgements for these categories.

Invitation Letter

Not required for an ordinary tourist staying in confirmed hotel accommodation.

For private accommodation, Malta's Declaration of Proof and host documents can apply.

Police Clearance Certificate

Not required for a normal Schengen Tourist Visa.

Medical Examination

Not normally required.

Biometrics

Applicants attend VFS personally.

VFS captures the applicant's photograph as part of the biometric process.

Standard Schengen biometric requirements apply, including fingerprint collection where applicable.

For Minors

If travelling with only one parent:

• Written consent certified by a public notary from the non-travelling parent/guardian

• Copy of non-travelling parent's passport.

If travelling without either parent:

• Notarised written consent from both parents/legal guardians

• Copies of parents'/guardians' passports.

Also provide:

• Identification documents of parents/legal guardians 

• Custody/guardianship evidence where applicable.
