Spain

• Indian ordinary passport holders require a Schengen visa to visit Spain for tourism.

• The correct category for tourism of up to 90 days is the Schengen Short-Stay Visa – Type C.

• Spain must be the correct Schengen country to process the application.

Normally, apply through Spain when:

Spain is the only destination

OR

Spain is the main destination because the traveller will spend the longest period there

OR

Spain is the main country connected to the principal purpose of travel.

If there is no identifiable main destination because the traveller will spend equal time in multiple Schengen countries, the competent country is generally determined according to the first Schengen entry.

• Applications from residents of India are submitted through BLS International.

• Applicants must apply according to the correct Spanish consular jurisdiction.

• Jurisdiction is based on the applicant’s current residence, generally for at least the previous 6 months, and not simply the place where the passport was issued.

Passport Requirements:

• Passport must have been issued within the previous 10 years.

• Passport must have at least 2 blank pages.

• The legal Schengen minimum is normally validity for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area.

• However, the Embassy of Spain in New Delhi currently publishes a stricter India-specific requirement that the passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond the planned departure date.

Tripex should therefore use the safer India screening requirement:

Passport validity: 

At least 6 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen Area.

• Handwritten passport applications may not be accepted according to current BLS/Schengen requirements.

• Copies of the passport bio-data pages are required.

• Copies of previous visas and immigration stamps in the current and previous passport should be provided.

Application Form:

• Completed computerized Schengen Visa Application Form is required.

• The Embassy of Spain in New Delhi currently requires the application to be signed in blue ink.

• BLS states that handwritten application forms are not accepted.

Photograph:

• One recent passport-size colour photograph is required

• Photograph must:

Be recent

Have a light / white background

Show the complete face clearly

Not contain sunglasses or items obscuring the face

Comply with current Schengen biometric photo specifications

Travel Medical Insurance:

• Travel medical insurance is mandatory.

• Insurance must be valid throughout the entire Schengen Area.

• Insurance must cover the complete intended period of travel.

• Minimum medical coverage: 

EUR 30,000 per person.

• The insurance must cover:

Emergency medical treatment

Emergency hospitalisation

Medical repatriation

Repatriation in case of death

• For a Multiple Entry visa application, insurance must at least cover the first planned journey, with an undertaking to maintain valid insurance for subsequent journeys.

Travel Purpose:

• A covering letter explaining the purpose of travel is required.

The covering letter should clearly explain:

Tourism purpose

Travel dates

Countries to be visited

Length of stay

Who is paying for the trip

Applicant’s occupation

Applicant’s intention to return to India

• Detailed itinerary should be provided.

Flight Booking:

• Round-trip flight reservation is required.

• Spain officially recommends that applicants avoid purchasing non-refundable tickets until the visa has been issued.

• If visiting multiple Schengen countries, intra-Schengen transport bookings should also be provided where applicable.

Hotel / Accommodation:

• Confirmed accommodation covering the entire stay is required.

For independent tourism:

Hotel reservations

• If the applicant is staying with family or friends in Spain, a normal personal invitation letter is not sufficient.

Spain uses an official “Carta de Invitación” issued through the Spanish National Police for private accommodation.

• For an independent hotel-based tourist, a Carta de Invitación is not required.

Financial Requirements – Visa Application:

• Original personal bank statements covering the last 3 months are required under the current Embassy of Spain in India checklist.

• Bank statements must be:

Original / properly issued

Stamped by the bank

Signed by the bank

• If another person sponsors the journey:

Sponsor’s bank statements are required.

An original signed sponsorship letter should explain what expenses the sponsor will cover.

Proof of relationship between sponsor and applicant should be provided.

Income Tax:

• Income Tax Returns are specifically required under Spain’s current India Tourist Visa requirements.

Provide:

ITR-V

OR

Form 16

for the last 2 years.

Where sponsored, the sponsor’s applicable income-tax documents should also be provided.

Salary:

• Last 3 months salary slips should be provided where available.

PAN:

• Spain’s Embassy in New Delhi currently specifically requests a self-attested copy of the applicant’s PAN card.

• Sponsor’s PAN may also be relevant where sponsorship documents are submitted.

Employment:

For employed applicants, recommended/required supporting documents include:

Employment letter

Approved leave / NOC

Last 3 months salary slips

Last 3 months bank statements

Last 2 years ITR-V / Form 16

PAN copy

For self-employed applicants:

Business registration

GST registration where applicable

Company incorporation documents where applicable

Partnership Deed where applicable

Unemployment itself does not automatically prevent an application.

The applicant should provide:

Evidence explaining the applicant’s personal circumstances and reason to return to India

Proof of Residence in India:

• Applicants must prove residence within the applicable Spanish consular jurisdiction.

Spain gives examples including:

Recent utility bill showing applicant’s full name and current address

Lease agreement

Property deed

Other appropriate residence evidence

Documents should generally be recent, typically not older than 6 months where applicable.

Aadhaar:

• Aadhaar is not listed as the core mandatory Schengen financial document.

It may be included as supporting Indian identification/address evidence where useful, but Spain specifically asks for PAN in its current India financial checklist.

Financial Means Required at the Spanish Border in 2026:

Spain has a specific statutory financial-means requirement.

For 2026, the officially published minimum is:

EUR 122.10 per person per day

with an absolute minimum of:

EUR 1,098.90 per person

regardless of the planned length of stay.

Example:

5-day trip: 

Although EUR 122.10 × 5 = EUR 610.50, the traveller must still be able to demonstrate at least EUR 1,098.90 because of the statutory minimum.

10-day trip: 

EUR 122.10 × 10 = EUR 1,221.

These are border-entry financial requirements and should not be confused with an automatic bank-balance guarantee for visa approval.

The Embassy can assess overall financial circumstances beyond these minimum amounts.

Biometrics:

• Biometrics are mandatory for most Schengen applicants.

• Applicants aged 12 and above normally provide fingerprints and a facial image.

• If valid fingerprints were previously collected for a Schengen visa within the last 59 months, they may generally be reused.

• The Consular Office may request fingerprints again where:

Previous data cannot be retrieved

Fingerprint quality is insufficient

Identity verification requires new collection

• Children below 12 are exempt from fingerprint collection.

Minors:

For applicants below 18:

• Application form must be appropriately signed by parents/legal guardians.

• Notarised parental authorisation may be required.

• Copies of both parents’ or legal guardians’ passports should be provided.

• Birth certificate should be provided where applicable.

• Additional custody/guardianship documentation is required where relevant.

Travel Insurance: 

Mandatory.

Bank Statements: 

Mandatory under the India checklist.

Return Ticket: 

Round-trip reservation required.

Hotel Booking: 

Required for independent tourism.

Invitation: 

Not required for standard hotel-based tourism.

If staying privately: 

Official Spanish Police Carta de Invitación is required.

ITR / Form 16: 

Required under the India checklist.

PAN: 

Self-attested PAN copy required under current New Delhi Embassy guidance.

Aadhaar:

Police Clearance Certificate:
